The myth of intellectual immunity
Many people assume propaganda works only on the passive, uninformed, or emotionally impulsive.
That is comforting, but false.
Propaganda often works best on smart people because smart people are:
- faster at building explanations
- better at defending identity
- skilled at integrating contradictions
- socially rewarded for confidence
What intelligence can become
When intelligence is uncoupled from humility, it often becomes an instrument of self-sealing logic.
Instead of asking whether a narrative is true, the mind asks whether the narrative can be defended.
Those are not the same thing.
Why this matters in elite environments
Highly educated people often inhabit worlds where:
- prestige reinforces consensus
- social cost punishes deviation
- complexity is used to dismiss plain truth
Under those conditions, intelligence does not dissolve propaganda. It upgrades it.
Better protection
The real protection is not high IQ. It is:
- epistemic humility
- friction against certainty
- willingness to lose status for truth
- contact with reality outside elite narratives
Propaganda weakens when a person values truth more than the pleasure of seeming sophisticated.
